Navarasas

Navarasas, are the nine basic expessions form the basis of abhinaya in Indian Classical dance and theatre. I have often wondered as to how the same emotion when performed by different artistes can have varying influences on the viewer.

Children, by virtue of their innate innocence can serve as ideal tutors for the dancers and artistes because of the unadultrated nature of their minds. What is there in the mind is instantly refleted on the face. Have a look at how my nephew Sheedhar demonstrates this to support my arguement ...........

KARUNA .............COMPASSION

SHRINGARA ........ LOVE

HASYA ....... LAUGHTER

KRODHA ......... ANGER

VEERA ....... COURAGE

BHEEBALSA ........... REVULSION/DISGUST

BHAYANAKA ........ FEAR

ADBHUTA ...... SURPRISE

SHANTA ....... PEACE
